It's official - spring is here again and for all those swimming wannabes that means it is the time to dig your togs out of the wardrobe, dust off your goggles and hit the pool or the beach. For those who have been using the cold of winter as an excuse to stay dry, time is up on that. But if you are still not convinced, here are a few great reasons why spring is the best time to start your swimming journey.
First of all, spring offers a psychological boost. The season is often associated with new beginnings, making it a perfect time to commit to new fitness goals. The longer daylight hours provide more opportunities for outdoor swimming, with early morning and late afternoon/evening a great time to fit in a swim. Also the increased exposure to sunlight can boost mood and energy levels, which helps you stay motivated and excited about your training, making it easier to stick to a consistent routine. In addition spring gives swimmers the chance to enjoy less crowded pools and open water spots before summer crowds arrive. Whether training at a local pool or in the lake or ocean, you want to make the most of things being less hectic. This can be particularly beneficial for beginners who may feel intimidated by busy environments. By the time summer arrives, swimmers who began in spring will already be well underway in their fitness and in a set routine. Even though the crowds will still arrive in summer, you will not be intimidated by them as you would as a newbie swimmer. If you are a swimmer who needs some extra instruction and support to meet your swimming goals, spring is often the time when programs are launched, meaning there will probably be more choice and availability than when summer arrives and more people start enrolling. Instructors who have probably had a few months off will be refreshed and ready to start their new season with enthusiasm. It is great to be a part of this. Finally there is just that x factor about spring - the promise of warmer weather to come and knowing the days will get longer for the foreseeable future. There's nothing as nice as fitting in a swim before or after work or heading down to the beach early on a weekend and leaving long before the crowds arrive. If you need some extra inspiration to kick start your swimming goals Get Swimming has many downloadable programs to help you - Couch to 1k is perfect for beginners as it is graduated in manageable steps. For those more experienced there are 10 Pack Sessions for distances from 1 - 2.5 km.
